Only some American workers have guaranteed paid sick leave, but a proposed federal law could change that. New York U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand is working to pass the Healthy Families Act.
It would guarantee American workers sevn paid days off annually to recover from illness, seek preventive care,or to act as a family member’s caregiver.
“No one should have to choose between a paycheck and caring for a loved one or themselves," Gillibrand said. "Yet, as the cost of groceries, gas, and housing continues to skyrocket, hardworking Americans are still forced into that impossible position every day."
According to the release from Sen. Gillibrand, almost 27 million workers lack paid sick leave entirely in the U.S.
“Paid sick leave is a fundamental right and a commonsense protection that provides stability, ensuring families can handle life’s unavoidable challenges without falling behind on bills,” Gillibrand said.
The package also includes time-off for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault or stalking to seek recovery and assistance. Senator Bernie Sanders is a co-sponsor with 28 other Democratic colleagues, including New York Sen. Chuck Schumer.
