Onondaga County Legislator Maurice Brown is challenging long-time incumbent and fellow democrat Bill Magnarelli for the 129th State Assembly seat. Brown has questioned Magnarelli’s effectiveness after almost 30 years in office. The local Democratic party endorsed the long-term incumbent earlier this month. He wants a more equitable tax system.
“The wealthiest corporations and the top earners in our state are not paying their fair share,” said Brown. “If we want universal childcare, if we want to pass the New York Health Act, and if we want to fully fund the services families rely on, then we must require those at the top to contribute more. We cannot keep asking working families to carry the burden.”
One area Brown highlighted is transportation and he suggests there should have been more progress, given Magnarelli is on the Assembly Transportation Committee. The self-described Democratic Socialist says he plans to work on housing costs, crime prevention and raising taxes on the wealthy. Brown will challenge Magnarelli in a primary this June.
