Syracuse Area Music Awards announces new director

James Austin was selected as the new director of the Syracuse Area Music Awards (SAMMYS), after having served on the board since 2018.

The Syracuse Area Music Awards, better known as the SAMMYS, has announced its next director, and he’s a familiar member of the team.

James Austin began his affiliation in 2004 and holds professional experience as a grassroots music promoter supporting local and international artists in R&B, Reggae and Jazz. He’s also a former Best R&B SAMMYS-album winner where he was a contributing writer on the album.

Austin handled merchandise operations for the SAMMYS, assisted with event logistics, and co-hosted the event in 2020. He has served on the board since 2018.

Scott Willis covers politics, local government, transportation, and arts and culture for WAER. He came to Syracuse from Detroit in 2001, where he began his career in radio as an intern and freelance reporter.
