North West Fire District Assistant Chief Jeff Belczak is joined by members of other departments as they kick-off Recruit NY weekend Apr. 23, 2025.

The search is on to find more volunteer firefighters in New York.

The International Association of Fire Chiefs said 90% of firefighters and emergency services workers in the state are staffed by volunteers, but maintaining minimum staffing has become a problem.

To address this, the Firefighters Association of the State of New York will hold its 17th annual RecruitNY event this month to try to fill the void.

Hundreds of volunteer fire departments will open their doors and explain the rewards and satisfaction of being a volunteer firefighter in their community. The RecruitNY events are on April 18 and April 19.

Interested people can learn more via the RecruitNY website.
