Veterans and their families gathered at the War Memorial Tuesday for a celebration and honoring of their service. Carol Anne Wood is the grandmother of a woman currently serving in the U-S Army. She would write poems for her granddaughter and the platoon, and quickly became known as the platoon grandmother.
Unfortunately not all service members are able to return to their families and communities. A special table was set up to honor those Missing in Action or who are Prisoners of War.
Other ceremonies and tributes were held at Syracuse University and Onondaga Community College. OCC Student Hasani Zulu is also a Purple Heart Veteran who returned last year from a tour in Afghanistan.
Zulu is pursuing a fire protection and EMT degree. He says he knows firsthand how important first aid is on the battlefield, and wants to use his leadership and treatment skills in the civilian community.
