Is There An Apparent Power Struggle In the Cases of Cheney and Taylor-Greene? Maybe Not

SUNY Cortland website

It might appear there's an ongoing power struggle on Capitol Hill this week but, the Chair of the Political Science Department at SUNY Cortland says the politics between two particular cases are much different.

Bob Spitzer says Liz Cheney retaining her number three position by way of a secret vote is no surprise.

“Members of the republican caucus, indeed are very conservative, and have many have strong Trump supporters in them; I think had some sympathy for her first.  Secondly, I think she’s viewed as a good leader within the party… and in addition to that, the fact is that the case for impeachment for Donald Trump is a might strong one.”

Spitzer felt all along that Congressmember Marjorie Taylor Greene from Georgia would lose her committee assignments.  He feels what she has stated in the past including the idea of violence against the Speaker of the House is enough of a reason.

“This is not without precedent in the last 20 years there have been several members of Congress who have lost their committee assignments for various reasons.  It is an extreme step and an extreme move, she won’t be expelled from Congress; although the House of Representatives has that power under the constitution, so she would continue to be a representative in Congress but, she would not have committee assignments.”

Taylor-Greene talked back her previous comments yesterday about events such as 9/11 and others.  Spitzer adds its evident there’s plenty of loyal Trump supporters and republicans are voting with that in mind.   He adds that some in the party might support an insurgent to perhaps challenge incumbent republicans in some home districts... and current GOP office holders would rather not face that.
