Big need for little backpacks

Backpacks
Donations of small backpacks are still needed to help area children in need

Mary Nelson's Youth Center is calling for donations of small backpacks for its annual back-to-school giveaway, aimed at supporting children in need. Although Nelson has gathered sneakers, clothes, and school supplies for 10,000 kids, there is still a shortage of backpacks for students in pre-K through third grade.

The Mary Nelson Youth Center was founded in 2000 by Mary Nelson after the loss of her nephew to gun violence. Driven to equip children with the values and skills necessary for success and leadership, Nelson started the center as a platform for education and community support. Originally a community barbecue for distributing school supplies, her efforts have grown into the Mary Nelson Youth Foundation, which continues to enrich the lives of children and families.

Donations of backpacks can be dropped off at the Mary Nelson Youth Center on South Salina Street, or contributions can be made online. This year's giveaway will be held on August 17th at Sankofa Park on Syracuse's south side.
