Central New Yorkers who ship or receive packages from Asia should expect an increase in shipping costs

Central New Yorkers shipping or receiving packages from Asia may be paying more for shipping next month. UPS will impose a new "Surge Fee" on U.S. imports from China and 12 other countries, starting September 15, to address rising costs and increased demand, especially from e-commerce companies like Temu.

The surcharge will be $0.50 per pound for shipments from China, Hong Kong, and Macau, and $0.25 per pound for 10 other countries, with no specified end date. This move is expected to increase revenue for UPS on fast-growing shipping lanes while helping the company manage the less profitable volume from large e-commerce platforms.

UPS anticipates that other carriers, like FedEx, may follow suit with similar charges. The new fee could also impact shipping agreements, as current contracts don't account for this specific charge.
