A Syracuse man faces stiff civil penalties after carrying a firearm to a checkpoint at Hancock airport Wednesday.
Transportation Security Administration officers confiscated the loaded handgun found in the man’s carry-on bag.

The passenger told TSA agents he normally uses the bag for trips to the firing range and didn’t realize it still had his loaded gun inside when he packed for his trip. He faces up to $15,000 in fines.

Travelers can take their firearms on a flight, but they must be unloaded, packed and locked in a hard-sided case, and declared at the airline check-in counter. More information on what items can or cannot be packed in a carry-on bag, checked bag, either or neither can be found on the free myTSA app.
