Student loan payments resume, New York officials warn of scams targeting borrowers

Federal student loan payments resume this month after a nearly four-year pause due to the pandemic. As loan notices go out, the New York Department of State’s Division of Consumer Protection is warning student loan borrowers that scammers are impersonating government agencies, while offering fake loan forgiveness deals.

Borrowers are urged to use only trusted websites like StudentAid.gov and contact their loan servicer directly for help if needed. With the federal student loan grace period ended, missed payments can now be reported to credit bureaus.
