NYCLU calls on councilors to make the CRB more effective

City of Syracuse

The New York Civil Liberties Union and concerned residents have sent a letter to Syracuse Common Councilors expressing concern with the struggling Citizen Review Board.

The body that investigates complaints of police misconduct is trying to function after its paid administrator and small staff resigned in late September. In the letter, the NYCLU calls on councilors to convene a legislative advisory committee to study and recommend amendments to make the CRB more effective, efficient and accountable.

The NYCLU recommends against amendments that would supplant the board’s authority and decision making, so it remains free of government interference. They’d like a more wholesale approach to changing the CRB’s ordinance, rather than piecemeal.
