Pennies for Charity report urges caution when donating this season

300 pennies stacked with only those closest in focus.
The New York Attorney General’s "Pennies for Charity" report reveals that charitable campaigns in 2023 raised nearly $1.5 billion statewide.

‘Tis the season of giving, but the State Attorney General is warning New Yorkers to use caution when donating.

The latest Pennies for Charity report released by the AG’s office shows charitable campaigns in 2023 collected nearly 1.5 billion dollars in New York. On average, charities received 83% of donations, an improvement from 77% in 2022.

However, in fewer than half of the campaigns, charities received less than half of those funds raised, and some campaigns lost money, costing charities over $26 million due to expenses exceeding revenue.

Donors are encouraged to verify organizations, ask about fees, and review fundraisers’ track records through the Pennies for Charity database. If you’re still in doubt, email Complaints@ag.ny.gov, call (212) 416-8401, or visit the Attorney General’s website.
