The New York State Tax Department is reminding taxpayers to carefully read and respond to letters requesting additional information.

If you’ve received a letter from the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, don’t panic—but don’t ignore it either. The department is sending notices to some taxpayers requesting more information to verify tax return details.

Officials say these letters don’t necessarily mean anything is wrong, but they do require attention. Taxpayers are urged to read the letter carefully, follow all instructions, and ensure any supporting documents are complete and accurate. Responding by the deadline listed is essential to avoid delays in processing.

Acting Commissioner Amanda Hiller emphasized that the department’s goal is to ensure returns are accurate and refunds are correct. Responses can be submitted through an Online Services account.
