Onondaga County to hold annual Memorial Day ceremony Sunday morning

Central New Yorkers will honor Memorial Day with parades and ceremonies across the region this holiday weekend. Events are planned in Syracuse, Baldwinsville, Fayetteville, and several other communities, each paying tribute to fallen service members.

Onondaga County’s Annual Memorial Day Ceremony takes place Sunday, May 25, at 10 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 4069 Howlett Hill Rd. in Syracuse. The event is free and open to the public.

This year’s Master of Ceremonies is Alex Behm, Executive Director of Clear Path for Veterans and Chairman of the Onondaga County Executive Veterans Advisory Board. Other speakers will include County Executive Ryan McMahon, Onondaga County Legislature Chairman Timothy T. Burtis, Assistant Director of Veterans Services Cindy Meili, and keynote speaker retired Navy Captain Matthew J. Doran of the Judge Advocate General Corps.

Bob Beck, a veteran media professional, currently serves as a part-time editor/host at WAER Public Radio and an adjunct professor at Syracuse University. Beck retired as News Director at Wyoming Public Radio in 2022 after 34 years. During his time, Beck won 5 regional Edward R. Murrow awards and 5 Public Media Journalists Association awards for reporting. He also won 11 PMJA awards for the news and public affairs program Open Spaces.
