A long talked about need for a grocery store in Downtown Syracuse is about to go well beyond what a traditional store looks like and launch the careers of those who aspire to open a food related business. The Allyn Family Foundation officially broke ground today on the 25 million dollar Salt City Market which is set to open by December 2020.
Executive Director Meg O’Connell says the market will serve as a beacon to welcome and connect neighbors.
“This project has been years in the making and it’s really coming together today to acknowledge the diverse talents of our residents and also acknowledging that to be a prosperous city, we must with intention, work to provide opportunities that are inclusive for all.”
The market will serve those interested in starting up their own food related stall with a full-use kitchen. Project Leader Maarten Jacobs describes how the space will be supportive and provide opportunities.
“There will be ten stalls, each acting as a free-standing business within the market, offering diverse foods... as the diversity found within our city. The idea is to create an environment all under one roof where all walks of life can come and experience the diverse flavors of Syracuse. We’re intentionally with primarily entrepreneurs of color, both native born as well as new residents in our community.”
Some of the applicants who have already applied had hundreds of guests sample their creations at the ground-breaking. Ngoc Huynh of Mamma Hai Catering wants to expand her reach with others who are also looking to share their talents.
“Every time there’s a new immigrant, there’s a new cuisine. What I love is that, you know, I’m making traditional Vietnamese food from my mom’s hometown and I just can’t wait to share it with everyone, if I get in that food hall.”
The four story building will also have a grocery store and the second location of Salt City Coffee. The 4th floor will have 26 income eligible housing units. Salt City Market will be built just across from the Marriott Syracuse Downtown at 484 South Salina Street.
