Syracuse-area 5th through 7th graders have a unique opportunity this summer to boost their digital literacy skills in a free, week-long program that begins later this month. Slots are still open for the AT&T ‘Cuse Digital Ambassador Program. Regional Director for AT&T external affairs Kevin Hanna says educators tell them kids need more exposure to these fields.

“At that age, they're so interested, and what we see from the smiling faces from the engagement of the children, from the feedback that we get, that it really has an impact on young people's interest in technology," Hanna said. "We hope that carries through as they continue their education.”

Hanna says they’re also seeking a diverse group of children for the program, especially those from underserved communities. Syracuse University is one of the summer program’s many partners. Director of Corporate Relations at SU’s school of information studies Sarah Weber says they cover a lot of ground.

“It will address really cool and fun and relevant topics like AI and robotics and cybersecurity, as well as coding, and digital literacy skills, all skills and topics that the students learning about now will support not only their future academic careers, but then their professional careers and beyond in life.”

Weber says having these skillsets set them up well for high school and college. Kevin Hanna with AT&T says the program also helps kids apply those skills in the real world.

“Finding factual news, that not everything that you read online is true, bringing awareness to the young students," Hanna said. "So it's really about keeping kids safe online as well, making sure their experiences are positive. And also, helping them to understand how technology can be used for social good.”

The ‘Cuse Youth Ambassador program runs Monday July 31st through August 4th at the Syracuse Academy of Science Charter School. Registration is open through July 14th.
