The waters and mountains of the Adirondacks will be popular destinations for Labor Day holiday travelers.

Many Central New Yorkers are getting ready to hit the road and make the most of the Labor Day holiday. But before you pack your bags, travel experts are sharing travel tips to make the trip is as trouble free and smooth as possible.

First off, remember timing is everything if you’re heading out by car. Triple -A of Western and Central New YorkSpokesperson Valerie Puma says traffic from holiday travelers will be busy Friday … so you might want to leave early to get to a destination at a reasonable time. She also stresses having your vehicle in good running order, even for shorter trips.

“So luckily, in our area, we're not too far from the Finger Lakes. So hopefully, you can just make that a quick day trip. If you are going to the Adirondacks, a few hours away, just [make] sure that you've got all of your lights in working order, your tire pressure, make sure that you've got all of your fluids. And if you are gassing up here, just … make sure that you're never going below that last quarter tank.”

Triple A’s travel estimates indicate traffic will be three-to-five-percent higher than last year. And that means even more people could need roadside help.

“Last year, AAA actually rescued over 300,000 motorists nationwide from Friday to Monday of Labor Day weekend 2022. And this year, that figure is expected to rise by about 3- to 5-%. So that's just how many people are going to be on the road. And you want to make sure that your car is in tip top shape so that hopefully you can avoid being one of those callers," said Puma

In addition to the finger lakes and the Adirondack regions, Central New Yorkers are expected to go to Toronto and Niagara Falls, as popular destinations for the holiday weekend.

Overall, travel has rebounded markedly from last year; Puma says their survey found hotel bookings up 82-percent … and cruises are up 44-percent.
