A new year is always filled with new beginnings, the same is true when service members from Central New York make the transition from military to civilian life. Soon, they and other military members across the country will have an opportunity to begin specialized credentialing and certificate training that could help them land a job at Micron. It’s a part of the “Onward to Opportunity” program through the Institute of Veterans and Military Families at SU. Deputy executive director Ray Toenniessen said they’re developing coursework in semiconductor hub and learning pathways.

“Even those who don’t have experience in this… maybe who don’t have a technical background. If they see this as a great opportunity to get into a growing industry, we’re going to be able to provide the training, the education, the resources and the connections to land that meaningful career going forward,” Toenniessen said.

IVMF’s “Onward to Opportunity” program already has more than 40 career tracks and learning pathways. Toenniessen said the new semiconductor training is funded through a $3 million dollar gift from Micron.

“Yes, we think this is going to provide a great talent pipeline to them. But, they also realize that they can’t hire everybody, right? Or the goals and aspirations of someone going through this program may not match-up where Micron has a site or a location here in the United States.”

He says the semiconductor program for military members is still a few months away from launching. In the meantime, they’re working with Micron for possible employment opportunities for veterans in Clay and facilities in Idaho and Virginia. IVMF is also establishing relationships with other partners within the semiconductor industry.
