Bags of trash are seen scattered on the lawn in front of a Syracuse home. This is considered an illegal setout and would be a violation.

Syracuse rolled out a new notification system Tuesday aimed at keeping residents informed about health and sanitation violations.

The city’s SYRNotify program delivers near-real-time email alerts to property owners, tenants and property managers whenever issues like illegal setouts or improperly placed trash carts are reported. The system supplements traditional mail and posted notices, allowing people to receive alerts as soon as violations are issued.

Notifications include details of the violation and instructions on how to correct it, giving residents the chance to act quickly, often within the 24-hour cleanup window before city crews return. The city said the system will help people avoid repeat violations and fines.

Mayor Ben Walsh said the program is part of a broader push to make city services more transparent, accountable and responsive.

“By keeping residents informed in near real time, we are making it easier for everyone to stay in compliance,” he said.

Residents, tenants and property managers can sign up for SYRNotify here.
