Democrats have won control of statewide leadership positions, major news organizations projected Tuesday evening.
Governor's race
Governor Kathy Hochul won reelection for a second term, defeating Republican Nassau County executive Bruce Blakeman.
She focused her reelection campaign on affordability, including her efforts to improve the state’s child care system, the passing of energy rebate checks and the state’s one-year moratorium on new hyperscale data centers.
While an ardent critic of the Trump administration's cuts to federal health care programs like Medicaid, Hochul resisted calls from progressives to tax the state's uber-wealthy to plug the resulting budget holes.
During the campaign, Blakeman criticized Hochul for the data center moratorium, supported ending the state's sanctuary status for immigrants, and proposed tax cuts. He also said he would cut Medicaid "in half," before contradicting himself repeatedly by saying he never made such a claim, WAER reported.
Running alongside Hochul, Adrienne Adams won her bid for Lieutenant Governor, defeating Republican candidate Todd Hood.
Other statewide election results
Attorney General Letitia James won reelection, defeating Republican challenger Saritha Komatireddy. In her victory speech, she said the results reflect a rejection of the Trump administration.
"These days, powerful forces are urging us to leave our neighbors behind, pulling us apart and putting one group against the other," James said. "As we learned tonight and down the ballot, New Yorkers will not stand for leaders like that."
State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli also won reelection, defeating Republican challenger Joseph Hernandez.
