Andy Musser '59
Inducted in 2012Andy Musser’s voice defined Philadelphia Phillies baseball for a quarter of a century, delivering consistent, professional play-by-play from 1976 until his retirement in 2001. Musser first discovered his passion for broadcasting as a teenager, winning the Junior Sportscaster Award in 1956 and calling innings of a Phillies game alongside Gene Kelly and legendary announcer By Saam.
When he replaced Saam in the Phillies’ booth in 1976, Musser joined Harry Kalas, Richie Ashburn, and Chris Wheeler to form one of the most celebrated broadcast teams in baseball. Known for his calm, precise style, he rarely missed a game and was behind the mic for iconic moments including Mike Schmidt’s 500th home run and the Phillies’ 1980 NLCS victory. His contributions were recognized with induction into the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia Hall of Fame in 2011.
A graduate of Syracuse University, Musser first gained on-air experience at WAER before beginning his professional career at WHP-TV in Harrisburg. He went on to KSDO in San Diego, where he covered Chargers football, and later returned to Philadelphia with WCAU radio and television, broadcasting Eagles football, 76ers basketball, and Villanova games. From 1971 to 1974, he was also part of CBS-TV’s national coverage of major events, including the World Series, Super Bowl, and the Masters.
