Toby Shelley

Toby Shelley, 59, is from Otisco and has a master's degree in criminal justice, a bachelor's in history and associate degrees in fire protection, liberal arts and logistics, all from Columbia College. He joined the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office Police Division in 1994, later served with the Village of Jordan Police Department and has been sheriff since January 1, 2023. He is also a 30-year military veteran. During his term he expanded the school resource officer and body-worn camera programs, reopened the Pistol License Unit to all citizens and started a Traffic Anti-Crime Unit. He also armed jail deputies with tasers, supported the AIR 1 public safety resource and says he came in under budget each year. He is helping move the downtown jail to a joint facility in Jamesville. His priorities include accountability and transparency, and his office holds people for ICE only on judge-signed warrants.
