Pop Life: Wayward by Dana Spiotta

Samantha (Sam) Raymond is a 53-year-old woman who succumbs to the internal rewiring caused by menopause. She becomes a bit unhinged and makes a major life decision that has a significant domino effect on her family and her life. She buys an old, dilapidated house that she intends to nurture and rehab, and, in the moments immediately following that decision, leaves her marriage, teenage daughter and suburban life behind.

Wayward is a coming of middle-age story told by Syracuse-based author, Dana Spiotta. And in this special WAER/North Country Public Radio mashup edition of North Country Bookmarks and Pop Life, Dana helps us understand the forces guiding Sam’s life decisions and why she chose Syracuse, NY as the backdrop for her critically acclaimed novel.
