Councilor-at-Large Khalid Bey Announces His Candidacy for 2021 Syracuse Mayoral Race

The 2020 Election is barely in the rear view mirror, but some are already looking ahead to the 2021 Syracuse mayoral race.   Councilor-at-Large Khalid Bey announced on Facebook Live Friday that he’s seeking the democratic nomination.  Despite progress, he says the city still faces significant challenges.

“I’ve heard a lot over the years about our struggles as a city. With high unemployment, a steadlily decaying housing stock, failing infrastructure, lack of safety in our homes and our neighborhoods in general, we are aware of our city’s continually weakening financial health. The difficulties of achieving sustained business growth, population reduction, and the list continues.” said Bey.

One topic that has been in the local and national spotlight is police reform.

“Obviously when you’re talking police reform, you’re talking about leadership. Leadership has to be such that it comes in with a philosophy of people first. I don’t say that to slander or to paint a bad picture on anyone.  Often times, decisions are made and actions are taken that are injurious to the citizens.” said Bey.

From an operations standpoint, the city and Onondaga County have been looking at more opportunities to consolidate, or share services.  Bey says the city needs to work on its own house first.

“I’m more interested plugging the leaks.  I'm more interested in shoring up our foundation, making sure that we’re reducing redundancies, making sure that we’re finding savings where we can.  It didn't fall apart overnight, and we won’t rebuild overnight.” said Bey.

In addition to Bey, fellow democrat and Councilor-at-Large Michael Greene has also declared his intention to party leaders to  run for mayor.  Incumbent independent Ben Walsh is expected to seek a second term.
