WAER's signature coverage on poverty in our City Limits Project was among the work honored by the Syracuse Press Club with awards this past weekend. Sports journalism and ensemble pre-game shows also won awards.
WAER Sports Countdown to Kickoff for the Camping World Bowl was selected as Best Sports Show. Dana Grey, James Colgan, Connor Federico and JD Raucci worked on the broadcast, among others. Another pregame show, Countdown to Kickoff for the SU-Clemson football game took second place in the category. It was produced by Dana Grey, James Colgan , Connor Federico, and others.
The City Limits story "Ending the Prison to Poverty Pipeline" was selected as Best News Feature, produced by WAER News Director Chris Bolt. Another City Limits piece, “Stepping Up and Into a Healthier Life” , produced by WAER's Katie Zilcosky won Best Radio Feature in the student category. Other news stories honored included: James Colgan's “Undefeated: Tim Green Story” as Best Human Interest Feature; and “Parkland School Shooting Inspires Local High School Students to Organize March Against All Gun Violence” by Chris Bolt as second place for Best Spot News Coverage.
WAER sports journalists swept the competition in Best Sports Story, including: 1st Place: Tim Leonard, “From the Pitch to the Gridiron”; 2nd Place: Connor Federico, The Eric Dungey Legacy”; 3rd Place: J.D. Raucci, “Boeheim vs. Boeheim II: Coach Coaches With and Against His Son”. All of their stories were chosen against numerous entries.
Oher winners in the Student Category for Best Radio Sports Story included: James Colgan, “The Bear” about broadcaster Hank Greenwald, and Anthony Mazzini, “The Rise to Success From a True Freshman”. And in Student Category for Best Radio Feature, Ford Hatchett was honored for "Country Nation."
The honors were handed out in the Syracuse Press Club's 41st annnual awards, at a celebration Saturday night.
