Syracuse Hands Duke First Win of Season

Cuse.com

Syracuse was unable to stop four-star quarterback by the name of Chase Brice. Does that name sound familiar? Well Brice used to play for the Clemson Tigers. In 2018, Brice led a win against Syracuse when starter Trevor Lawrence left the game with an injury.

Brice came to the Dome to seek a second win against the Orange, and he did just that. Duke defeated Syracuse 38-24 following a strong start from Brice. Brice would throw for 270 yards and two touchdowns.

Syracuse was missing Andre Cisco for the second straight game after suffering an injury in pregame warmups last week. Eric Coley also was absent in today's game, making the Syracuse secondary weaker than normal.

Once again, the defense had trouble stopping the run game. This has been a trend that has been ongoing since last season. The Blue Devils compiled 363 total yards on the ground today, including two separate running backs rushing for 160+ yards. This is not the situation the Orange defense wants to be in when they welcome the best running back in the conference in two weeks, Clemson's Travis Etienne.

One stat where the Orange did dominate ironcially was turnovers. Syracuse pulled away with three fumble recoveries and one interception. This is where it gets interesting, despite Syracuse's inability to stop the run game, they now have caused the most turnovers in college football since 2017 with 81. Miami, who plays Clemson later tonight is second with 80 takeaways.

With these extra possesions, however, Syracuse was only able to score 7 points from the extra possessions. That came back in the first quarter, when Syrac Geoff Cantin-Arku returned a fumble recovery to the house for a touchdown. Other than that, Syracuse punted or had a turnover on downs followint the other three turnovers.

Despite having these extra possessions, the Syracuse offense had just a third of the first downs that Duke did. The Blue Devils finished the game with 36 first downs compared to Syracuse's 11. Duke would dominate the time of possession too, being on offense for nearly 40 minutes, compared to Syracuse's 20.

Rex Culpepper would come in to the game for the Orange in the fourth quarter, after Tommy DeVito left with an ankle injury. He headed to the locker room and returned to the sideline with crutches and a boot. It is currently unclear what his injury is or how long he will be sidelined. Syracuse fans should prepare for Rex Culpepper to fill in for DeVito for the time being.

Syracuse falls to 1-3 on the season, while Duke snags its first win on the season improving to 1-4. Syracuse's next game will be against Liberty who is 4-0 on the season. Kickoff will be Saturday at noon. Tune into WAER at 88.3 FM for coverage. Contdown to kickoff starts 30 minutes before kickoff at 11:30, followed by the broadcast of the game starting at noon.
