WAER Syracuse Public Media is the newest member of the nationally renowned Report for America project placing promising journalists in local newsrooms to cover under-reported issues. WAER has selected Elijah de Castro as its RFA corps member.
De Castro, an investigative reporter covering public health and healthcare in Keene, New Hampshire, has family in Central New York and is a graduate of Ithaca College. As a corps member for WAER, de Castro will report on public health and health equity in the region.
Report for America has now placed 78 journalists in newsrooms across the country, dedicated to strengthening local journalism and expanding coverage in underserved communities as smaller to mid-size newsrooms serving rural America face ongoing financial strain.
Corps members, including de Castro, will undergo intensive training before reporting to their newsrooms in July. Other New York news organizations participating in Report for America include North Country Public Radio, The Ithaca Voice, Investigative Post, and New York Focus.
