State senators and Assembly members started to pass the first budget bills on Monday. Details for many major spending items have still not been worked out.

The state budget is now nearly three weeks late and will not be completed this week. Gov. Kathy Hochul and state lawmakers are planning to pass a fourth spending extender Thursday to get the state through the next few days.

The issue is still simmering as the governor and Legislature engage in their biggest task of the year, agreeing on a $227 billion dollar state budget.

The state Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing Wednesday on Governor Kathy Hochul’s nominee for the next chief judge, Hector LaSalle.
