Syracuse Common Council Approves Federal Pandemic Relief Funds For Police Department Training

Syracuse Common Councilors today approved the addition of 90-thousand dollars of federal pandemic relief funds toward public safety. The money will be used for cultural competency and diversity training for officers, new recruits, and civilian staff.

In a statement, Mayor Ben Walsh says the training will foster a better understanding of different cultures, especially regarding conflict management. He says it will also create greater consistency in how the department handles investigations, stops, and use of force.

Councilors have previously acted on other police department allocations from the Walsh administration, including funding for body cameras, neighborhood street cameras, and gunshot detection.
