Many families are being reunited with their loves ones at Central New York nursing homes following the state’s lifting of visitation restrictions. Menorah Park in DeWitt has already seen countless families reuniting for the first time in person since the pandemic began. Mike Svendsen says just by having families return enhances care for seniors and is very encouraging to them.

“They want to come in and really be able to talk with them.  You know, experience everything as if they were in their own home.  So, having the visitation back open has just been great for the residents and the families, as well.”

Sevendsen says residents felt isolated from their families when restrictions were in place and the facility did the best it could to connect residents with their loved ones. Now, with families allowed to visit, he says it’s also an added benefit to staff.

“I actually think it makes it a little easier because the families know the residents very well.  We have a whole dementia unit.  Having the families come down and have that association really helps the people with Alzheimer’s and dementia because they can remember the thoughts from a long time ago.  And having their family here just helps them bring all that back and really makes their life a lot better.”

Menorah Park has screening protocols for visitors such as taking their temperatures at the door and asking if they’d like a mask, if they’re unvaccinated. They also encourage visitors to socially distance at least six feet and to also stay away from other residents in common areas. The nursing facility is able to bring back activities such as music and entertainment for residents.
