New York State Attorney General Letitia James is warning New Yorkers about deceptive online sports betting companies as Super Bowl weekend approaches. The Super Bowl will be the first major sports event in which New York residents can legally bet online. The state recently legalized sports gambling just last month.

“I urge all New Yorkers watching the Super Bowl and betting online for the first time to be careful — don’t let scammers game your gamble,” Attorney General James said.

The attorney general's office listed off several ways to proceed with caution when it comes to online sports betting. These include listening to what other users are saying about a given platform and being mindful of unexpected restrictions on accessing your account, among others.

Those with a gambling problem can reach the New York Council on Problem Gambling at nyproblemgambling.org.
