Employers find a lifeline at local job fair amid worker shortage

Local businesses are still looking for new employees as they struggle to fill positions amid a worker shortage. As the economy still recovers from the worst of the pandemic, companies are using job fairs to go directly to job seekers.

This Wednesday, Destiny USA held a job fair with nearly 30 employers. Among those in attendance was Sysco’s Laurie Mara who hopes this event will help Sysco find their perfect fit.

“We send food to hospitals, prisons, universities, schools, so we’re always going to need these positions and people to fill these jobs”

Other companies shared their excitement to meet candidates face-to-face. Julie August, marketing coordinator for Haun Welding Supply, said her company relied on the event to connect with candidates and broaden their candidate pool.

“We as an industry are a little underrepresented here and maybe it’s a good thing. We’re not medical, we’re a pretty specialized industry. So, it’s important for us to start being more active in events like this so you’ll see us a lot more at events like this just to keep our name in the community.”

Both employers say despite their open positions they’re not just focused on workers' skill, but their motivation and attitude. August said that is what separates each job seeker.

Come in with the skills that you have but be willing to learn and grow with us as a company and continue learning.”

Employers that participated at the fair are trying to hire their way out of the worker shortage and are still looking for candidates.
