There are nearly 50 total projects that United Way organizers want to complete on their upcoming community volunteering event known as the Day of Caring. Volunteers are needed to help with preparing meals at the Samaritan Center, landscaping at Vera House and cleaning up Lower Onondaga Park.

The nonprofit's president Nancy Eaton said the August 4 celebration will also mark 100 years of the organizations service to the community.

“The power of United Way is that individually we can only do so much, but when we work together and think together, we can make a much greater difference,” Eaton said

United Way is asking volunteers to sign up now to for a project across a range of organizations across Central New York. There are opportunities to work at the Food Bank of CNY, the Rescue Mission and the Rosamond Gifford Zoo. Eaton said the event can boost impact by encouraging volunteerism on the same day.

“August 4th will be a day when people from across the community can be shoulder to shoulder, elbow to elbow, working with our nonprofit organizations to make a difference," Eaton said.

Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh said he’s looking forward to how the mass effort will beautify the community.

“When you can bring people in this community together for a good cause, it has impacts far beyond whatever they’re doing at that given time. It infuses this city with energy and hope and excitement and it inspires other people to do the same,” Walsh said.

The sign-up website lists projects seeking volunteers.
