Central New York women are adhering to cervical cancer screenings at high rates, contributing to a decrease in deaths, according to a data analysis by Excellus BlueCross BlueShield.
Onondaga County achieved an 81% cervical cancer screening rate, a release from the health plan said. The number of cervical cancer cases diagnosed in the state has decreased by 40%, while the number of deaths has dropped by 50% since 1976. Doctors attributed this to high screening rates.
Screening rates by county vary in New York, with the lowest in Cortland County at 76%, and the highest in Oswego at nearly 91%.
