New York state distributing more monkeypox vaccines to virus hot spots

New York State counties with higher rates of monkeypox should begin to receive vaccines for eligible residents.

The federal government allotted the New York State Department of Health an additional 8,822 JJYNEOS vaccine doses that will go toward several counties and New York City, which will receive 2,000 doses from the state. Additionally, the city is receiving its own allotment from the federal government of nearly 24,000 doses. The area has the state's largest concentration of the virus with at least 639 cases, according to state data published Tuesday.

Of the remaining doses, 2,600 doses will go toward Westchester County, which has reported 18 monkeypox cases. Suffolk County will receive 1,800 and Nassau County is set to get 1,000 doses. Both counties each had 4 reported cases.

Monroe and Erie counties, which reported 4 and 2 monkeypox cases, respectively, will each receive 600. Albany County will get 40; The region recently identified its first case.

The state is also sending 300 doses to Saratoga County, where no cases have been reported. Onondaga County has also not reported a case, but is not set to receive vaccine doses.
