A New York state senator is pushing financial relief privately owned recreational ski facilities.

Sen. Joseph Griffo, a Republican and Conservative from Rome, is proposing a bill that he said creates a level playing field for privately-owned ski areas in New York, as state-owned ski centers are already exempt from sales taxes, according to a news release.

Griffo, whose 53rd state district includes Oneida and Madison counties as well as parts of Chenango and Herkimer counties, said the proposed legislation would eliminate the sales tax on qualifying energy efficient lifts, snowmaking and grooming equipment. He also said the bill exempts sales tax from fuel, gas, electricity and refrigeration used in snowmaking, as well as energy efficient equipment purchases.

"My legislation will help these facilities by providing them with important relief that will help them to flourish for years to come," Griffo said in a statement.

Griffo is urging Gov. Kathy Hochul to incorporate his legislation into her spending plan, his office said.
