The City of Syracuse is looking for a new Commissioner of Parks, Recreation, and Youth Programs as Julie LaFave plans to take a new role with the New York State Fair.

In a release, Mayor Ben Walsh said the city will launch a nationwide search to fill the role.

Lafave first took on the role in 2018 at the start of the Walsh Administration. She led the department during the pandemic and oversaw the addition of adaptive equipment to parks facilities.

“I’m very grateful to Julie LaFave for her service to our city," Walsh said. "Julie’s professional experience and exuberance for parks took Syracuse to a whole new level during the past five years.”

According to the release, LaFave will leave her position as Parks Commissioner May 1 to begin her role as Operations Director at the New York State Fair.

Applications to the position, which include duties related to budgeting, operations, maintenance, and capital improvement, are now open.
