LeMoyne College received the largest gift in the college’s history today by one of its own alum and his wife. The college has been bestowed $12 million dollars for the Dr. James and Mary Carroll College of Arts and Sciences. LeMoyne President Linda LeMura says it’s typically easier to name schools attached to business and health professions.

“Arts and Sciences is a bit more challenging and the fact that we now have a name for the heart and soul of the institution where the core curriculum resides and the essence of our values of a Jesuit tradition resides. This is just really, truly a magnanimous gift.”

Dr. Carroll graduated from LeMoyne in 1966 with a double major in history and political science. He spoke of how difficult it was to put himself through college with some support from his Mom after his father died shortly after he graduated from high school in 1962.

“I’m so glad that $6 million dollars of my grant is going to be used directly to help economically disadvantaged students toward their tuition.”

Dr. Carroll adds he also hopes his grant assists LeMoyne students with their room and board. For the past 37 years he served as a research associate professor at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School up until his retirement a few months ago. He wants to dedicate more time to spend with his wife who has Alzheimer's. LeMoyne College is a supporter of WAER.
