AAA warns Central New Yorkers: Deer crashes spike during colder months

Two deer browse at night
Kat Kollins

Buckle up Central New Yorkers while driving during these colder months. AAA is warning deer crashes are the fifth most common causes of accidents.

Last year, the agency says New York drivers crashed into animals - mostly deer - more than 35,000, and 986 of those were in Onondaga County alone. The drivers in nine of those crashes statewide died.

AAA reminds drivers to be especially vigilant after dark as deer crashes often occur outside daylight hours. Crashes are most common near sunset.
