The Syracuse City School district can finally celebrate the opening of the long-awaited STEAM School Tuesday. The district and city officials plan a ribbon cutting for September 2nd at 4:00 pm.

Officials call it a ‘state-of-the-art facility focused on education in science, technology, engineering, the arts and math. Classes are designed around project-based learning, with hands-on experience.

The renovation of the historic building at South Warren and East Adams Streets has been in the works for years. The STEAM School designation was officially announced two years ago. However, other initiatives to renovate the former Central High School building into office, and a city plan to reopen it as a high school in the early 2000s fell through. Students haven’t sat in the classrooms since the 1970’s.
