Syracuse motorists see spike in gas prices, but it shouldn’t last

The Labor Day holiday brought an end to summer break for many; it also ended a summer-long dip in gas prices. Syracuse’s average price for unleaded gas jumped nearly 6-cents-a-gallon, the largest spike in months.

The average in the area hit $3.12-a-gallon. Analysts also say the range at different stations was wide – from $2.86 to $3.39 around the region.

Gas Buddy analysts say Labor Day gas was at its lowest prices in 5 years, until this past week’s jump. But they don’t believe CNY drivers will see big increases in the future. Crude oil prices remain stable, and if states with refineries avoid major hurricane disruptions, gas prices should remain lower than any of the past five years.

Other regions also saw prices increase this past week.

  • Rochester- $3.14/g, up 2.2 cents per gallon from last week's $3.12/g.
  • New York- $3.13/g, up 0.9 cents per gallon from last week's $3.12/g.
  • Scranton- $3.18/g, up 1.2 cents per gallon from last week's $3.17/g.

Syracuse’s prices for the week jumped, even as the national average dipped around 3 cents, further indicating the local spike will not continue.
