Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer condemned racist, sexist, and violent comments, allegedly from members of the Young Republicans organization across the country. He said Tuesday that every Republican leader has the obligation to join him in condemning these comments if the report is proven true.
“It’s the kind of garbage that the worst kind of people say when they think no one is watching,” he said.
A Politico report cited messages containing a multitude of racist obscenities and jokes about things such as gas chambers and sexual assault. These private messages were between members of the group, including some of the organization’s leadership.
“They include comments, supposedly from Young Republican leaders, saying things like ‘I love Hitler.’ Can you believe it?” Schumer said.
If the report is proven true, Schumer hopes that “every single Republican leader from Trump on down” will join him in condemning these comments “swiftly and unequivocally” and that they have the obligation to do so.
USA Today reported that the Young Republican National Federation has called for the immediate resignation of the members who sent racist texts in the chat.
"We are appalled by the vile and inexcusable language revealed in the Politico article published today," the Young Republicans' board of directors said.
