A crackdown on dangerous driving over the holidays resulted in more than130-thousand tickets. The New York State Traffic Safety Committee’s “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” enforcement period ran December 10ththrough New Year’s Day.
More than 24,000 tickets were given out for speeding, another4623 for impaired driving, and 5066 for distracted driving or texting. The bulk of the tickets were issued for what troopers called “other violations.”
Officials say such crackdowns raise awareness about driving hazards and remove reckless drivers from the state’s roadways.
“The consequences of impaired and reckless driving can simply be avoided by making a plan for a safe and sober ride,” said Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder, in a release. “These infractions put millions of people unnecessarily at risk as they are 100% preventable."
