Travelers arriving to Syracuse Hancock International Airport will noticing traffic and parking changes as construction gets underway soon on a new rental car facility– disruptions that will last more than a year.

The Syracuse Regional Airport Authority said the changes are part of a multi-year project aimed at modernizing airport infrastructure and streamlining movement through the airport.

The first change hits Friday February 20th, when the entrance to the Overflow Parking Lot on the north side of the parking garage closes, giving remaining vehicles time to exit before full construction begins in mid-to late March.

Once construction is underway, both the Overflow Parking Lot and the Arrivals B section will close for approximately 14 months.

All passenger pickups will shift to Arrivals A, the only active pickup area during construction.

Due to the expected congestion at Arrivals A, the authority is urging drivers to wait in the cell phone lot off Eileen Collins Boulevard, just past Mohawk Global, until their party is ready at the curb.

To offset the parking loss, the airport added a new shuttle-served lot on Air Cargo Road. Travelers should also expect updated signage across the campus as part of broader wayfinding changes.

Executive Director Jason Terreri acknowledged the disruption the project may cause.

“We recognize that construction can be disruptive, and we sincerely appreciate the community’s patience and understanding as we make these important improvements,” Terreri said. “The end result will be a significantly enhanced airport experience for all who travel through SYR.”
