Former Syracuse Common Council President Helen Hudson is returning to chambers after councilors appointed her to fill a vacant seat.

Hudson had to leave due to term limits. Councilor Rita Paniagua stepped down from her council seat and ran unopposed to succeed her. That created the vacancy, and Hudson will fill out the final year.

She and others plan to seek the seat in November. The final vote was six to two, with Hanah Ehrenreich and Jimmy Monto saying they wanted more time to consider other candidates. Hudson served as president for the last eight years and as a councilor for six years prior.
