Visitors to Fair Haven Beach State Park on Lake Ontario will soon see crews restoring various habitats.

Supported by a $210,000 grant from the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation's Sustain Our Great Lakes program, the project will protect recreational resources, restore natural processes, and improve wildlife habitat.

New York State Parks will survey 500 acres of coastal dunes, bluffs, wetlands, and forested areas in the park, which are home to several rare and threatened species.

Those habitats are threatened by invasive species including Japanese knotweed and water chestnut. Crews will remove that as well as woody vegetation from dunes. They’ll also relocate sand to restore dunes at Sterling Pond.

Facilities will remain open, though some trails or beach sections may occasionally close while work is underway. The $344,000 project continues through 2027.
