Syracuse-area Congressmember John Mannion is expressing relief that the Veterans Administration has rescinded a new rule that would have reduced benefits for thousands of veterans.

Mannion joined 60 of his colleagues and the veteran’s community to stop a rule that changed the veteran disability ratings evaluation. It would have directed examiners to reduce compensation ratings for veterans who take medications to control their conditions or reduce their symptoms.

Mannion said the VA failed to include input from veterans and ignored judicial precedent.

“Our veterans have earned their health care and disability benefits through service and sacrifice,” Mannion said in a release. “They should never be penalized for following their doctor’s orders or forced to choose between managing their condition and paying their bills.”

A copy of the letter Representative Mannion signed with his colleagues to the Federal Register demanding the Secretary of Veterans Affairs fully rescind this misguided rule can be found here
