New York State lawmakers are being asked to support legislation that would fund lead pipe replacement. The Lead Pipe Replacement Act would spend $100 million replacing the pipes and protecting families in the process.

Experts say New York has a half million lead service lines still in use, possibly contaminating water and putting families and especially children at risk of lifelong health impacts. The legislation also establishes a statewide plan to get rid of all lead pipes by 2037. Advocacy groups say many municipalities and consumers can’t afford to replace lead pipes and that’s why they are asking for legislative help.
