A new state law goes into effect today requiring stores to accept cash payments. It’s illegal for a food store or retailer to force customers to use credit cards and refuse cash for goods or services.

There are exceptions: Stores don’t have to accept bills in denominations above $20, or accept cash for orders made by phone, mail or internet.

Attorney General Letitia James says she won’t hesitate to enforce the law. Maximum civil penalties are $1,000 for the first violation and $1,500 for each succeeding violation. Customers can submit complaints online to the AG’s office or by calling 1 (800) 771-7755.
