The Onondaga County Water Authority (OCWA) said it will inspect water lines in its five-county service area from now until June.

OCWA wants to check the construction material of the underground water lines of 1,200 customers. That is only about 1% of OCWA's customers, according to its website.

OCWA said residents will be notified ahead of time, and a precise non-destructive digging method will be used. The checks are part of a federal regulatory requirement to check on water lines periodically.

The excavation site will be quickly filled, and the results of the investigation will be provided to the customer. OCWA plans 100 inspections a week, and customers don’t have to be home. The agency said water service will not be disrupted during the check.
